Introduction

Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE) provides centers with qualifications in business and management, accounting, computing, law, health and social care. ATHE qualifications are approved as progression pathways to Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s top up degrees by a number of UK and international Universities, providing significant tertiary education opportunities for learners globally.

Course overview

The ATHE level 5 qualifications in healthcare management provide strategic management skills for those planning to or working in the healthcare sector both internationally and in the UK, including additional units that are specifically targeted at those working in the public sector. The ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Management for Health and Social Care is (a minimum of) 120 credit Ofqual Regulated Qualification equivalent to the second year of a bachelor’s degree.

The qualification in healthcare management have been developed to conform to the requirements of the RQF, to meet the requirements of the sector and to respond to the needs of the sector. We provide a flexible route for learners who have already achieved management qualifications at a lower level and for learners who do not have healthcare management qualifications but may have qualifications in other areas and/or prior management experience in the workplace.

ATHE qualification is designed to provide:

  • opportunities for learners to develop a range of knowledge and skills, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life
  • opportunities for learners who wish to undertake a full-time course of study leading to a Diploma

On successful completion of a Level 5 qualification in Healthcare Management there are a number of progression opportunities.

  • This qualification has been designed for learners who are seeking to progress to a university bachelor’s degree course in an area of management within the healthcare sector

Entry requirement

  • Prior study in Healthcare Management or related subjects at level 4 or above
  • A level 4 qualification for example an ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Management for Health and Social Care
  • Other equivalent international qualifications
  • Learners may also have relevant work experience.

Qualification Structure ATHE Level 5 Diploma in Healthcare Management

The ATHE Diploma in Healthcare Management is a 120-credit qualification.

Rules of combination

  • Learners must complete the six mandatory units totaling (95 credits) plus a further two or three units from the list of optional units to achieve a minimum of (120 credits) for the Diploma. At least 80 of the credits for the qualification as a whole must be at level 5.

Unit Title; Level Credit Unit aim
Facilitating Change in Health and Social Care (Level 5; 15 Credit). Mandatory. This unit aims to develop learners’ knowledge and applied skills to be able to facilitate change in health and social care setting.
Managing Communication (Level 5; 15 Credit). Mandatory. To provide the skills and techniques to analyse and control finance in a public sector environment. To explain accountability for public sector finance.
 People Management (Level 5; 15 Credit). Mandatory. In this unit learners develop the knowledge and understanding of what motivates individuals and teams and be able to use this to review people management strategies used in organisations.
Research project (Level 5; 15 Credit;). Mandatory. To formulate a research specification on a chosen topic, implement the research project, evaluate and present the research findings.
Leading Practice in Health and Social Care (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. To be an effective in leadership in health and social care requires a need to supervise and manage provision and lead and support others through workforce provision.

Working with Multi-Disciplinary Teams

(Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional.

This unit aims to give learners the knowledge to be able to work within multidisciplinary teams within a health and social care setting.
Management of Safeguarding for Health and Social Care (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills to be able to manage safeguarding for health and social care within a health and social care setting.
Corporate Social Responsibility (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around corporate social responsibility within a health and social care setting. Learners will understand current corporate social responsibility issues and the impact of these for a business and stakeholders.
Resource Management (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around resource management within a health and social care setting.
Management of Activity Provision (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. The unit develops student’s knowledge of activity provision in health or social care and how it is managed. In many healthcare or social care situations, the evidence of positive physical and psychological benefits of activity provision to service users has been demonstrated.
Planning a New Business Venture (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. The aim of the unit is to develop business planning skills. These skills can be applied to either a small micro enterprise or a new venture within an existing company.
Managing Stakeholder Engagement (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. The aim of the unit is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge and understanding required to engage with stakeholders and to learn how to manage stakeholders in projects and organisations.
Leading Organisational Equality and Diversity (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. The aim of this unit is to enable the learner to develop an understanding of the importance of managing equality and diversity within the organisation and to understand how to lead the approach to equality and diversity within an organisation.
Manage Sustainability in an Organisation (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. To develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to be able to identify sustainability issues within an organisation and to put in place suitable management systems for legal compliance and corporate responsibility purposes.

Managing Quality in Health and Social Care (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around managing quality within a health and social care setting.
Empowering Users of Health and Social Care Services (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around empowering users of health and social care services.
Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around health and safety within a health and social care setting.
Employability Skills (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills around employability skills within a health and social care setting. Learners will learn about and understand the dynamics of working with others.
Personal and Professional Development (Level 5; 15 Credit). Optional. This unit aims to give learners the knowledge and applied skills for personal and professional development within a health and social care setting.

 Assessment methods 

This course will be graded with ‘Pass or Fail’. A range of assessment tools will be used and this might include assessment through:

  • A research activity resulting in the compilation of a report
  • An academic paper or article for publication
  • The compilation of a case study
  • A critical review and evaluation of a chosen company’s policies, procedures and systems
  • A set project completed for an employer (also known as an ‘employer-engagement’ activity)
  • The production of a portfolio of evidence relating to a particular unit

Certification and awarding body

Upon a successful completion of this Programme as stipulated by ATHE, you will be awarded the ATHE Level 5 in Healthcare Management. ATHE regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England
